Chapter 7

Renn called Kimberly as he drove to the outskirts of the city where the warehouse Paul used was located.

“I’ll find out what time Anna was taken,” Kimberly said. “Fricks and Columba can’t stop me from calling Mrs. Green. I’ll call you back as soon as I know. Is there a reason you need to know this?”

“There is, but it’s based on a hunch I have. I’ll get back with you,” Renn said.

It was quite a ways to the warehouse, so while he was driving, Renn called Bob. He explained briefly what he’d learned and where he was going.

“I think I should come with you,” Bob said.

“I’ll be fine. You and Lia need to keep attempting to locate the guy who’s hounding you. Have you made any more progress?”

“Not yet. But I do have some workers here patching up the office. They’re going to install a new outside door,” Bob told him. “I’m also installing some cameras. Too bad I didn’t do that sooner.”

The call ended on that note.

A few minutes later, Renn located the warehouse. Three cars were parked near a small door at the front of the building. One was a silver Jaguar, a second one was a blue pickup that was jacked up so the bumper was over two feet off the ground. The third one was a bright yellow Corvette. These guys must make a lot of money—illegal money, he thought as he parked beside the Jaguar.

Renn checked his pistol. Then he reached down and made sure his backup gun was secure in his boot. He slipped a sharp knife with a six-inch blade inside the back of his pants. Finally, he put his phone on silent, slipped it back into his pocket, and adjusted his jacket to make sure the weapons were hidden. He started for the building.

Renn stepped next to the door and listened. He could hear laughter coming from inside, then he heard a scream and a girl’s voice. “Don’t kill me. I’ll be good now.”

Anna was in there. And she was in danger, possibly mortal danger. Renn moved to the side of the door and pulled out his phone. He made a quick call to Bob. “I found her at the warehouse,” he whispered. “I’m still outside. She’s inside screaming. Get some cops here. I’ll wait as long as I dare.”

Bob said simply, “Will do.”

Once again making sure his pistol could be rapidly drawn from the holster, he put the phone back in his pocket. He waited for a couple of minutes, becoming increasingly concerned as the girl continued to scream.

“Somebody help me!” she called out twice. Then there was a loud slap accompanied by more raucous laughter.

“Just kill her,” a voice said. “We don’t need her alive. I didn’t think she would be so much trouble.”

“But the mine,” a second man said.

“We’ll take her there, but she doesn’t need to be alive for that. We’ve got her voice on the phone saying she’s alive. That’s all we need. Do it now!”

Renn couldn’t wait for backup.
